Markovic heads to Sporting

The Serbia international returns to Portugal after making just 34 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Benfica in 2014.

Markovic – who scored three goals during his time at Anfield – has struggled to break into the first team in the Premier League, and was sent out on loan last season with Fenerbahce.

Portugal Beat France to Win Euro 2016 Final

Real Madrid forward Ronaldo was carried off on a stretcher in tears in the 25th minute, eight minutes after injuring his knee in a clash with France's Dimitri Payet.

France, the firm favourites, were unable to capitalise on Ronaldo's absence, although they almost won it at the end of normal time when substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac turned and hit the inside of the post.

Portugal into Euro final

The Portuguese star, who has had to soak up a lot of criticism for a lacklustre tournament by his high standards, powered in a 50th-minute header to put his side in front.

Ronaldo then had his mis-shot turned in by Nani for a second goal three minutes later, ending Wales' remarkable run at their first major finals since 1958.

The Portuguese, who had not won a single game in the tournament over 90 minutes, next meet hosts France or Germany, who play their semi-final tomorrow.

Ronaldo's Portugal scrapes into semi-finals with penalty shootout victory

Teenage sensation Renato Sanches, who scored Portugal's goal and smashed home one of the penalties, said it was a "wonderful moment for the team and for me for scoring".

It will be the fourth time Portugal have reached the semi-finals in the last five European Championships.

Portugal have reached the last four without winning a single game within 90 minutes.

"People criticise us but we don't care, because we are in the semis," Sanches said.

Portugal down Poland on penalties

Jakub Blaszczykowski failed to convert Poland's fourth penalty, which was saved by Rui Patricio, as Portugal earned a semi-final against either Wales or Belgium.

Poland raced into the lead in the second minute when Kamil Grosicki burst down the left and crossed into the middle where Robert Lewandowski sidefooted the ball into the net for his first goal of the competition.

Portugal held by Iceland in Euro 2016 opener

RNZI reports it was a miserable evening for Portugal's top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo even though he equalled Luis Figo's record of 127 appearances for his country.

Iceland produced a typically industrious performance on their debut in a major tournament with winger Birkir Bjarnason cancelling out Nani's first-half opener.

A string of good saves by goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson, coupled with Ronaldo's wasteful finishing was a significant factor for Iceland.

British tourist rescued after 'trying to swim to cruise ship' in Portugal

Susan Brown, 65, told maritime police that she and her husband had decided on Saturday to fly home early from their cruise aboard the Marco Polo, which had stopped over that day in Madeira, Funchal port harbour captain Felix Marques said.

However, Marques said Brown told police she later lost sight of her husband at Funchal airport after they argued and was "feeling desperate".
