Malaysia MP: Ok for rape victims to marry their rapists

Shabudin Yahaya from the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition said marriage could help victims "lead a better life".

Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country, has just passed a new law on sexual offences against children.

Despite opposition efforts, the law does not ban child marriages.

It remains legal for Muslims under 16 to get married in Malaysia under certain circumstances.

But that's what Icelandic author and journalist Thordis Elva has done with her former high school boyfriend who raped her when she was 16 after a school Christmas party.

Her boyfriend was an 18-year-old Australian exchange student, Tom Stranger, who said he felt entitled to have sex with Thordis despite her being so drunk that people at the party had suggested they call an ambulance.

The 22-year-old woman was rescued on Sunday when the vehicle she was driving was pulled over in a routine traffic stop in rural Mitchell, approximately 350 miles west of state capital Brisbane, police said.

She was "visibly distressed" and had scratches and bruises on her neck and face, police added.

Police officers searched the vehicle she was in and the man, also 22, was found hiding in the back of the vehicle.

The violence, sparked by the alleged harassment of a young Hindu woman by a Muslim man, lasted two days.

Violence erupts at protests over alleged police rape in Paris suburb

More than 2,000 people marched Saturday in Bobigny, a suburban town nearly six miles (9.2 kilometers) northeast of the French capital. They chanted and carried signs demanding justice for a 22-year-old man who says he was sodomized by a police officer's baton.

The demonstrations turned violent when a few hundred protesters broke away from the march and began rioting, police said. They smashed windows, set cars and trash cans on fire and attacked law enforcement personnel, who responded by firing tear gas into the crowd.

Manus Island asylum seeker charged with raping school student at hotel

Manus Province commander David Yapu said the accused was alleged to have met his 18-year-old victim in the town, before taking her to the nearby Harbourside hotel and raping her multiple times.

"The victim suffered loss of blood until she managed to escape from the room," Yapu told Fairfax Media. The incident occurred on January 17.

The victim attempted to reach safety at a relative's house but "fainted" at the side of a river until she was rescued by a passers-by, he said. She was then taken to Lorengau General Hospital for treatment.

Three arrested in Sweden over 'gang rape' on Facebook Live

The alleged crime took place in an apartment in Uppsala, a city about 50 miles north of the capital, Stockholm.

In a statement, the Uppsala County police said they were alerted at 8:24am Sunday.

"This rape was broadcast live on a Facebook group and numerous people have been in touch regarding seeing this broadcast," they said.
