Huge blast at Spanish fireworks factory kills 5, wounds 6

The blast occurred around 2 p.m. (1200 GMT) at the Pirotecnia Zaragozana factory in the small town of Pinseque, sending a dense plume of white smoke into the sky that could be seen for kilometers (miles).

The injured were taken to a hospital in the nearby regional capital of Zaragoza, said Gustavo Alcalde, the central government's top Interior Ministry official for the region.

Some 1,000 residents were evacuated from the town Hoyos in the early hours of the morning after overnight winds "reversed all yesterday's firefighting achievements," said Extremadura regional government president Guillermo Fernandez Vara.

Fernandez Vara said more than 6,500 hectares (25 square miles) had burned since flames were detected Thursday in the Sierra de Gata — a region of outstanding natural beauty.

Moroccan dies while being smuggled into Spain in suitcase

Francisco Jerez, spokesman for the Interior Ministry's office in Almeria, said the 27-year-old man was found late Sunday when his brother sought medical help for him just before the ferry arrived in the southern Spanish port.

Jerez added that the brother, a Moroccan with a French passport, was arrested.
