Students of Vanuatu school test positive for Covid-19

The cases were detected during the first day of testing of 77 students of Ranwadi Secondary school in Penama province who appeared to have flu-like symptoms.

The Penama health manager Markson Tabi said they will now test all 300 students at the school.

Tabi said a health team from Port Vila is going to assist the Penama team that is already at the school.

They will assist with setting up a quarantine camp and other logistics because there is no hospital on Pentecost.

Vanuatu confirms 2 repatriation flights for students in Fiji

The flight dates have been notified by the National COVID-19 Taskforce, said Chairman of the National Scholarship and Training Board (NSTB), Collin Natonga.

The repatriates are government sponsored students according to a Daily Post report.

It includes the 26 students who were supposed to return after competing studies at the end of this year’s first semester.

VT26 million(US$231,000) was spent on their allowance and accommodation while waiting for repatriation, said Natonga.

Vanuatu government to decide on plight of students in Fiji

A number of ni-Vanuatu students at the University of the South Pacific have been caught up in Fiji's alarming COVID-19 outbreak, with several having tested positive for the virus and gone into isolation.

The Daily Post reports that Vanuatu's Prime Minister Bob Loughman was briefed on the students' situation Thursday by education officials.

A paper with options on how to support the students if they wish to return home is to be deliberated on by Vanuatu's Council of Ministers.

Vanuatu final year students in Fiji on repatriation flight

The passengers include students of the University of the South Pacific, Fiji National University, Fulton Adventist University College, Uni Fiji as well as some Vanuatu citizens.

According to VBTC, the students are happy to be returning home after completing their studies despite Covid-19.

The repatriation flight is the second one organized by the Government.

The first flight was on 30 November, which took home 230 passengers.

Other students will remain and celebrate Christmas and New Year in Fiji as borders are still closed.

 

Vanuatu Ministry of Education and Training launches a radio-learning programme to support home schooling

The programme is for students from kindergarten up to primary level.

 The first radio programme aired on Friday 10 April 2020 at 5pm covered setting up a working environment and capturing children’s attention. The Homskul Givhan programme is aired every Monday from 5pm to 5:30pm for parents of kindergarten age children, every Wednesday from 5pm to 5:30pm for parents of students in Years 1 to 3 and every Friday from 5pm to 5:30pm for parents of students in Years 4 to 6.

Vanuatu police charge students over drugs and pornography

Eight students were among those charged for possessing marijuana and viewing pornography.

The students were caught in an empty house near their school.

A police statement said officers conducted a three-day ‘Operation Black Ice’ and arrested a total of 35 people.

The accused will appear in court on 5 December.

The operation was focused on eradicating marijuana and a total of 29 searches were conducted, including a vessel.

Thirteen young people were arrested at another empty house near Karri Shopping and Freswota 6 Hill for marijuana possession.

French high school student arrested after shooting principal, two others, police say

The armed 17-year-old was arrested after the shooting, which happened at the Alexis de Tocqueville school in the town of Grasse, about 40 kilometres from the southern city of Nice.

Vanuatu sends fact-finding mission to PNG

Minister for Education, Jacque Nirua confirmed the government has seriously taken note of calls for repatriation made by the students following the two separate violent clashes by students and the police, and between students from two highlands regions.

The fact-finding mission came after the Council of Ministers was briefed by the foreign affairs yesterday on the update of violent clashes including the student-police fiasco that resulted in one death and 50 people left with injuries.

Goroka campus on lock down as student factions riot

Reliable sources at the University of Goroka campus told Loop PNG that the fight broke among the faction of Chimbu/Goroka students and the Western Highlands/Enga students.

The source who wanted to remain unanimous because of safety reasons said the disagreement between the students started on Saturday where students attending their inservice training agreed to resume classes today but this did not go down well with other students.

Currently, the main gate at the campus is closed as people are gathering at the gates.
