Fiji secured a semi-final spot after defeating Australia 19-0 in the quarter-final last night.

It was the captain Jerry Tuwai who struck first with a try after fooling the Australian defense with his trade mark skip step.

Australia could have scored a try before halftime but Waisea Nacuqu made a try saving tackle dislodging the ball from the Australian player on the tryline.

Tuwai showed his magic again with a second try while Aminiasi Tuimaba added another to seal the team’s place in the semifinals.

Cumbo failed to score any points against Uzbekistan’s Sharofiddin Boltaboev.

Boltaboev won the event scoring 10-0.

Team Vanuatu’s last outing at the Olympics will be on Friday when Rower, Rii Rio Rillio competes in his last event.

Fiji stretched their lead after Jiuta Wainiqolo used his strength from a quick tap two minutes later to score the second try which was converted by Bolaca.

However, just before halftime Japan managed to score a team try through Lote Tuqiri as the hosts led 14-12 at the break.

Another Fijian, Kameli Soejima got Japan further in the lead with an unconverted try just after halftime as they led 19-12.

Kolinisau and others sent a message of encouragement to the team.

Fiji 7s Head Coach, Gareth Baber confirmed the video message was put together by former captain Kolinisau.

Baber added it’s very challenging and inspiring to hear from Kolinisau and others.

The national coach said what those players did was unbelievable and their message was timely.

He says we should all be immensely proud of the past players and the legacy they created.

Since the start of the year, three other organisers have been forced to step down from Tokyo 2020 - and the games have already been postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Asked at a news conference if the global sporting showpiece might still be cancelled, Toshiro Muto said he would keep an eye on infection numbers and liaise with other organisers if necessary.

"We will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases," Muto said.

"We have agreed that based on the coronavirus situation, we will convene five-party talks again. At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises."
