USP Emalus Campus offers MBA programme in trimester

The programme begins this week. The first course will be completed in 5 weeks.

Some 35 successful students who received their offer letters to do the MBA programme attended the three-hour orientation program Monday September 10, 2018 in the Emalus Campus Conference Room.

An MBA alumni graduate, Peter Tari, the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu, was invited to share his experiences as a student who undertook the program some years back. 

USP offers In-Country Science Programme for Vanuatu

“The government and I have been discussing the introduction of face-to-face science delivery in Vanuatu by USP since 2016 and we now have this opportunity to utilise it,” said Jean Pierre Nirua, Minister of Education and Training during an information session at the Emalus Campus last week.

Vanuatu Government and USP hold successful talks

A highlight of this visit was a meeting with the Honorable Charlot Salwai, Prime Minister of Vanuatu and Honorable Jean Pierre Nirua, Minister for Education and Training and their senior officials at the Ramada Resort in Port Vila, on 22 August 2017.

On behalf of the Government of Vanuatu, Hon. Salwai welcomed the USP delegation, congratulating them for the successful management of USP and the good relationship between USP and Vanuatu.

Marine waste monitoring training in Vanuatu

The marine waste monitoring is an awareness to the students about the importance of managing coastal ecosystems to ensure their continued resilience in the face of climate change, and continued provision of services to the people.

CEFAS under the CME programme is focused on water quality monitoring, seagrass mapping and marine waste monitoring in 2017.

The training was in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and USP.

USP extends lecture capture to Samoa & Vanuatu

The new state-of-the-art lecture capture system was first rolled out at the main Laucala Campus commencing from day one of Semester 1, 2017, and based on the success of this, it was extended to the two other campuses that deliver whole programmes.

The system, one of the largest in the Pacific, gives students access to video and audio recordings of many of their lectures and other teaching activities, providing a flexible learning experience. It uses a combination of commercial hardware and open source as its primary technology.

USP extends condolences to Vanuatu Government

On behalf of the University, Acting Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Derrick Armstrong extended their heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the Government and people of Vanuatu, and President Lonsdale’s family and friends.

Lonsdale served as the 22nd Chancellor of USP for a period of one year from July 2015- June 2016 and the University is grateful for his services during this term which he served with distinction.

“H.E. Lonsdale’s chancellorship was inspiring and we admire the passion with which he advocated for the University,” Professor Armstrong said.h

SOED ready to assist Vanuatu education

This, following a fruitful meeting between Professor Govinda Lingam, the Head of the SOED with the senior staff of the Ministry.

Professor Lingam acknowledged the presence of senior staff from the Ministry stating that the purpose of the visit was to get first-hand information from the Ministry about their concerns in education and how the SOED can assist in addressing these thereby improving the quality of education delivered in schools. 

USP in Vanuatu faces protest over pay issue

The President of the Staff Association Louise Vari said members were concerned that they wouldn't get their full pay if they quit the USP.

Mrs Vari said three staff members who resigned last year had yet to receive their severance pay.

She said nothing has been said or done about it.

RNZI reports those at the picket have asked the USP's senior management to confirm to them in writing that former staff will get their entitlement and those who will leave get paid on the last day of work.

 

     

USP marks Open Education week

The forum was organised by Centre for Flexible Learning on 29 March, 2017 at the Laucala Campus in Suva.

The forum also focused on progress on Open Education initiatives and opportunities and ways to enhance OER use an application.

Open education is about access to educational opportunities, the practice of open learning and engagement with open scholarship, said Professor Derrick Armstrong, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation and International.

Regional students among USP high achievers

Four students are from Samoa, two from Tonga and one from Vanuatu.

There are 27 students from Fiji.

The other awardees are from Solomon Islands, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Guyana, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Professor Derrick Armstrong, USP’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation and International said the ceremony is a very special one because of the record number of categories (49) and high achievers this year.
