After putting the hosts into bat, Vanuatu struck early with Apolinaire Stephen snaring the wicket of both opening batsmen.

That brought Ahmed Faiz to the crease, who anchored the innings with a well-paced 86 from 101 balls, to help Malaysia reach 196 all out in the 44th over.

In reply, seven Vanuatu batsmen made it to double figures but most failed to push on with player/coach Shane Deitz the top scorer again with a patient 46 from 72 deliveries.

They're targeting a return to Cricket League Division Five after being relegated from the same stage last year.

RNZ reports Vanuatu top the standings in Bendigo after sizeable wins over Indonesia and the Philippines.

But head coach Shane Deitz said it's important to stay focused and not peak too early.

"Every game's a final so that's how we're treating it and we're going hard every game," he said.

"We've got to put pressure on the opposition, which is what we're doing, and it's working out for us so far.

Vanuatu remain unbeaten with win over the Philippines

Vanuatu made just one change to the team that defeated Indonesia with Callum Blake returning after nursing a hamstring injury at the expense of Apo Stephen. The Philippines won the toss and took full advantage of the swinging ball early to reduce Vanuatu to 3-32 inside 7 overs thanks to Daniel Smith’s genuine pace. Nipiko and Mansale set about rebuilding the Vanuatu innings with a crucial partnership. Nipiko fell just 5 runs short of his 50 after putting on 75 runs with Mansale.

Vanuatu target World Cricket League return

"A few of our guys played in Europe: one lad played in Holland for the rest of that season and another lad, Patrick Matautaava, played in England."

Vanuatu in pole position to get back on World Cricket League ladder

Vanuatu will be up against Fiji, Samoa, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan, and for the winners there will be a chance to get back into the truncated World League system in division five next year.

Vanuatu's coach, Shane Deitz, says his team has warmed up for the contest, with a day in Melbourne, rubbing shoulders with some of Australia's star players, and playing a match against a local premier league team.
