Vanuatu nationals arrested for drinking alcohol

Acting Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu said the Vanuatu nationals were arrested for drinking alcohol at Raiwai, Suva.

The Fiji Times reports Tudravu said alcohol and kava consumption continues to be linked to breach of curfew arrests and health restrictions as the majority of those arrested were found drunk.

This is the second time Vanuatu nationals have been arrested for breaching curfew orders since Fiji’s second wave of COVID-19 cases began two months ago.

Ten students were fined FJ$300 each by the Magistrates Court in Suva last month.

That's despite the fact both governments have extended their work visas to 12 months.

The Vanuatu government says flights are being organised for hundreds of citizens set to return by the end of the month.

But there are fears this might be too late for others who've been stranded in Australia on temporary visas.

Pacific Beat understands there are at least 200 Vanuatu citizens stuck abroad since March, after leaving the country for short visits; including George Malas, who visited Australia with his family for a friend's wedding almost three month ago.

The Fijian Government, through the Ministry of Sugar Industry, as part of its efforts to address labour shortage and increase cane production, made arrangements to bring into the country the Vanuatu nationals for the pilot programme which is expected to run for three month.

3 Vanuatu nationals killed in crash, 2 seriously injured

Cassowary Coast Councillor Wayne Kimberley said the group had been staying at the Digger Creek caravan park near where the crash involving a mini bus and a semi-trailer occurred on the Bruce Hwy.

He said they and two others, who were injured in the crash, were from Vanuatu and had been working in the area.

Cairns Post reports Police had made contact with the Vanuatu consulate and are in the process of making contact with their family.
