Australian indigenous cricket men's team wins over Vanuatu

According to the Vanuatu Daily Post, the rain did not ruin the competitive spirit of both teams as the Australian beat Vanuatu by 126 - 91.

Tyran Lidard and captain Damon Egan scored the most runs for the visitors, scoring 57 and 51 runs respectively.

Australia took up the bats first and hit a total of 174 runs in the full 20 overs with five of their players being taken out by Vanuatu's Nalin Nipiko, William Nalisa, and Joshua Rasu.

The initiative also supports the expansion of planting more Tahitian limes with the use of a tractor for land preparation.

Tropical plantation was located on Santo Island and supplied most of its Tahitian limes to the supermarkets, resorts, and restaurants in Luganville town.

The farm has the potential and capacity to export its Tahitian limes to overseas markets under the national export programme of Tahitian limes as required by the national export pathway.

Commonwealth SG visits Vanuatu post-Cyclone Judy and Kevin to discuss climate action and climate justice

Her visit came at a critical time for Vanuatu, which is still recovering from the devastating impact of two Category 4 cyclones, Judy and Kevin, that hit the country in early March.

The cyclones affected 80 percent of Vanuatu's population, causing widespread and substantial damage across the country.

During her meetings with Vanuatu officials at the end of last month, including the Minister of Health, Marco Mahe, the Secretary-General was briefed on the health impacts of the cyclones, which have caused waterborne diseases to surge among the population.

Vanuatu lacks search and rescue resources

The Daily Post newspaper reported the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority confirming it was unable to respond to a recent distress call issued by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Noumea when the LC Urata Riki was sinking off Efate on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Urata Riki, MP John Amos, says the vessel had just spent 40 days on the slipway, at a cost of US$131,000 and was in perfect condition.

He told the paper that many parts of the vessel were replaced with brand new parts.

Vanuatu court rules against MP, declares seat vacant

The court found that Sanick should not have stood in last year's snap election, in which he won one of the six Malekula seats.

RNZ Pacific reports the court found that Sanick was under a suspended prison sentence for domestic violence and for breaching the Leadership Code, making him ineligible to stand.

At the time of the conviction he was a deputy speaker in Parliament.

The sentence is due to lapse in August this year.

The date for a by-election is yet to be announced.

Vanuatu commissions first female High Commissioner to Fiji

Viranria Brown, was commissioned as High Commissioner to Fiji by the Head of State Nikenike Vurobaravu.

The Ceremony took place at the State House where the signing of Letters of Credence by the Head of State followed by the presentation of Credentials to the High Commissioner by the Head of State.

Foreign Affairs Minister Jotham Napat and the Director General (DG) of the Ministry, Kalfau Kaloris, both described High Commissioner Brown’s appointment as an achievement in terms of women’s participation and leadership in the public life according to the Vanuatu Daily Post.

Vanuatu’s LC Urata Riki boat sinks with cyclone relief items

Chairman of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, or WASH, cluster, under the National Management Office Erickson Sami said the water was for the people on the southern islands of Aniwa, Erromango and Aneityum.

The ship was also carrying other relief supplies such as water tanks, which had been donated by the Australian government.

Sami said these items could not be recovered when the ship went down.

The company that operates the ship said there were no passengers aboard when the LC Urata Riki sank near Efate.

Toktok Noumea confirms strong demand for Vanuatu

The Vanuatu Tourism Office is pleased to announce the success of TOK TOK Noumea, a premier travel trade event held on April 20, 2023, in Noumea, New Caledonia. The event was attended by 53 travel agents from Noumea, showcasing Vanuatu’s unique tourism offerings and fostering valuable business partnerships.

China hands over more emergency relief assistance to Vanuatu

The presentation was made by the Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu, Liu Quan.

A statement said “The package included building supplies such as 30,000 meters of iron roofing, 3000 emergency lighting, tents, and other necessities along with food supplies like as 20 tons of rice, 200,000 instant noodles, and canned luncheon meat.”

Ambassador Liu said, “This marks a significant moment in our ongoing efforts to support those affected by the recent cyclone disaster. After almost two weeks sailing in the ocean, our assistance has finally arrived at our brother country Vanuatu.”

Vanuatu’s Malapoa College terminates teacher

The Daily Post says news of the pregnancy only reached the school administration this year but the woman became pregnant last year.

The chairman of the College, Fred Samuel, said the board has a zero tolerance policy on sexual relations between staff and students.

Malapoa College was built by the British Administration and called British Secondary School during the colonial era, to educate the children of the British public servants.

In the 43 years since Independence, the school has also taught a number of Vanuatu's prime ministers.
