England rugby league coach Wayne Bennett open to picking eligible NRL players for the Lions

Speaking at a media opportunity in Manchester, Bennett also shouldered responsibility for a controversial training camp in Dubai last month being cancelled, saying he did not communicate properly with Super League clubs.

He also said he would not extend his contract with the Rugby Football League before the World Cup, to be held in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in October, November and December.

Carlos Alberto dies following heart attack

FIFA confirmed the news this morning.

Alberto scored Brazil's fourth goal in their 4-1 win over Italy in Mexico's Azteca Stadium, a thumping drive that ended a move involving nine players, before hoisting the Jules Rimet trophy as Brazil won the title for the third time.

The classy defender played for Fluminense, Santos, Flamengo and New York Cosmos and won the nickname "The Captain" for his leadership qualities.

He was capped 53 times by Brazil.

   

Manuel Neuer named Germany captain

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper assumes the armband with immediate effect, his first game leading the national team set to be Germany's opening match of World Cup qualifying against Norway on Sunday.

Schweinsteiger's illustrious international career came to an end on Wednesday as Germany beat Finland 2-0 in Monchengladbach, the midfielder winning his 121st and final cap.

Rooney proud to break England outfield caps record

     

If Rooney plays against Slovakia in Sunday's World Cup qualifier he will make his 116th England appearance, moving ahead of David Beckham and trailing only goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

The Manchester United attacker said reaching the landmark will be a "huge honour", but stressed he is still focused on trying to win with England after confirming he will retire from international football following the 2018 World Cup.

"It'll be a proud moment and every time I've played with England I'm proud to do so and it's a huge honour," Rooney said.

Rooney to quit international football after World Cup

Rooney has retained the England captaincy under new manager Sam Allardyce and will lead the team against Slovakia in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

But the Manchester United forward has confirmed the next World Cup will be his international farewell, insisting his "mind is made up" that it is the right time to quit.

"Obviously i've been selected and I made my mind up before the Euros whether we did well or not that I'd continue so over the last few weeks I've had nothing to think about in terms of England," Rooney told a news conference on Tuesday.

Australia win, England sent packing

The Wallabies' victory - their biggest ever at Twickenham - lifts Australia to the top of Pool A, ahead of Wales on points difference, and consigns England to the ignominy of being the first World Cup hosts to fail to reach the knockout stages.
