New board members for Vanuatu Red Cross Society

Vanuatu’s first president, Ati George Sokomanu has been elected president of the Vanuatu Red Cross Society.

Veteran journalist, Moses Stevens has been elected Treasurer.

The Vanuatu Red Cross society held its Annual General Meeting on July 7 and elected new board members for a term of two years.

The AGM is mandated by the constitution to elect 8 members including the President, the Vice President and the Treasurer of the Society.

Three of the 8 members elected come from the branch of Torba, Sanma and Tafea.

Voters in the election included valid members of all the Provincial Branch also who have participated through proxy votes.

Since there were no other contenders for the position of the Vice President and Treasurer, the positions were declared as unopposed for the only 2 nominees for the respective positions.

The 2017 election was conducted by the Vanuatu Electoral Office which has appointed a special Election Commission to oversee the process. The process was very transparent and very professionally conducted with election booth installed and polling boxes etc.

The other board members are:

Vice President – Hannington Alatoa and members - Judah Sailas, Jacob Bani, Rodney Newell, Marie NG and Joseph Nok.
