Tsunami warning issued for Southern islands of Vanuatu

A tsunami threat is forecasted for the coastline of the Southern islands and parts of central island in Vanuatu.

Waves of 0.30 meters to 0.5 meters are likely to hit the coastlines of Tafea, Shefa and Malampa and possibly Sanama provinces.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is requesting residents in these provinces to take appropriate action and precautionary measures upon receiving the advisory.

 This includes immediate evacuation from coastal areas to higher grounds.

An earthquake of the size that hit off New Caledonia has the potential to cause destructive Tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epi-centre within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours.

Residents in the areas mentioned are advised to listen to all Radio Outlets

The warning was issued following a 7 magnitude earthquake striking near New Caledonia several hours ago.
