Vanuatu Government caucus claims PM Loughman has support

Vanuatu’s Government caucus met at Erakor island camp site today as Prime Minister Bob Loughman Weibur faces a motion of no confidence in Parliament.

The Government’s Public Relations Officer Fred Vurobaravu said the Government side has 28 MPs and is ready to defeat the motion of confidence against the Prime Minister.

Vurobaravu said 27 members of the Parliament were present today and they re-committed their support to the leadership of Prime Minister Loughman.

He released a photo in an attempt to verify support for the Prime Minister.

According to Vurobaravu, the Opposition does not have the numbers to pass the motion of no confidence.

The motion is scheduled to come up for discussion in Parliament tomorrow.

The Opposition accuses the government of excessive spending on self-interest in a time of national crisis.

This will be the first attempt to oust Loughman since he formed a government a year ago.

Today’s caucus meeting is another development in the ongoing political turmoil.

Last week four government MPs reportedly joined the Opposition, including the former Speaker, Gracia Shadrack when Parliament convened on Monday.

The Supreme Court is also expected to rule this week on the Government’s appeal against a court ruling that upheld the former Speaker Shadrack’s decision to expel 19 Government MPs including Loughman from Parliament.
