Vanuatu's Nalkutan FC racing to be ready for OFC Champs League debut

Vanuatu football champions Nalkutan FC are in a race to be match-ready less than two months out from their OFC Champions League debut.

The Southern club, based on the island of Tanna, won the Vanuatu National Super League grand final in August, beating Erakor Golden Star 1-0.

But head coach Moise Poida, a former Vanuatu men's national coach, said they have not played since and haven't got much time left to prepare.

"We will try our best to get ready before February because our country is different from the others. Now is the Christmas season/New Year season - everybody (is) on holiday, everybody is preparing food and things like that," he said.

"We cannot do much. We will work until everybody is free by the end of this month or early January then we will start doing the planning for everybody to be in camp from January so we prepare here in Port Vila before we will be going down to Solomon Islands for some friendly matches."

Moise Poida was coaching another Vanuatu club side, Tafea FC, earlier this year before Nalkutan FC asked him to assist them with their maiden OFC Champions League campaign.

"I've been with the team only one week in February...but I know them better because I'm from this part of the country, so I know the players, I know the mentality," he said.

"We were happy of the achievement (in winning the national league). Nalkutan is proving that it's not only a champion club but it can play better football."

"They were very physical. The club is not from the capital, it's from the southern part of the country...they have a very speed-like playing game on counter attack."

Nalkutan FC will have the added bonus of hosting their Champions League group from February 10-18, which also includes Papua New Guinea's Lae City Dwellers, Fiji's Ba FC and the winners of next month's OFC Champions League Qualifying Stage.

Poida said the biggest challenge now is to get some matches under their belts.

"We just had Mini Games and the season here in Vanuatu stopped for a couple of months just because they were using or preparing the fields ready for the Games and all the fields are free now so we can start next month, so we have only one month preparation before the O-League," he said.

"Maybe we can have some players from Port Vila to reinforce the team...all the players are all from Vanuatu but we have not decided yet maybe we bring three from Solomon Islands but (we are) not yet sure."

Erakor Golden Star will also represent Vanuatu in next year's Champions League.
