Vanuatu Opposition’s motion of no confidence ready for Tuesday

The Office of Speaker has also confirmed that 9 opposition MPs signed the motion and it was deposited by the MP for Efate constituency, Joshua Kalsakau.

The mover of the motion is the leader of the opposition, Ishmael Kalsakau and seconded by his deputy, Fred Tasso from Paama constituency.

The reasons of the motion:

1. The signing of PACER PLUS against the will of backbenchers and the members of parliament including the private sector of Vanuatu.

2. The possible introduction of Income Tax

Vanuatu opposition lodges no confidence motion

The opposition has listed six reasons for the motion, including concerns over corruption, ministerial "incompetence", decentralisation and tax.

The list also includes "tolerance of outstanding revenue totalling over Vt4 billion ($US36.1 million)" and the signing of the PACER Plus trade agreement.

The opposition bloc said it was concerned at the failure of the government to implement a decentralisation policy which was supported by a majority of MPs and at the proposed introduction of income tax.

Calls to probe abuse of power in Vanuatu

Mr Aru, the Sanma provincial president, said some ministers were claiming personal ownership of government projects that benefit citizens in order to strengthen their power bases in the provinces.

Mr Aru, who claimed to be speaking for all six provincial presidents, said they were concerned about the trend which did not reflect genuine leadership and transparency.

Vanuatu hold Fiji to a draw

Coach Chrishtophe Gamel said they applied the plan and were almost victorious.

“I am angry because we made a silly mistake and most of all our senior players made the mistake,” he said after the match.

“The gold medal might have flown away from us but we are still in the running as there are other teams who are strong contenders. We needed a victory against Vanuatu and now we are hanging in the middle.

Vanuatu breaks games record for medals

Vanuatu secured its sixth gold medal of the Games on Saturday morning in the final of the tennis Men’s teams event surpassing the previous highest total for the nation of five gold.

President of the Vanuatu Tennis Federation, CyrilleMainguy could not have been prouder of the performance on court this morning.

“We made history – it’s the first gold medal for Tennis in any Pacific Games,” he said.

“We have previously won silver in 2009 Mini Games, 2011, 2015 and this year at home we have got gold out of the nine countries that are present.”

Joy for Vanuatu table tennis father as children win gold

On Wednesday night Mr Lulu was in attendance at Korman Stadium to cheer on daughter Anolyn and son Ham to their country’s first gold medals in the women’s and men’s team event at the Vanuatu 2017 Pacific Mini Games.

“As a dad, I am very proud to see my kids play in the Mini Games,” he told the Vanuatu 2017 Games News Service.

“I have never seen them play in a competition like this because normally they play overseas. I had only heard their news from the radio or read it in the newspaper, and I had only seen them during training.

Women's football wows the crowd despite Vanuatu's scoreless draw

The showpiece of the night was a tough match between front-runners Vanuatu and Fiji that ended 0-0.

Vanuatu had been looking to build on their 5-0 opening win over Solomon Islands, while Fiji had recorded the same score over Tonga in their opener.

However this match proved a far closer contest. Both teams were very strong and had several chances.

The crowd cheered wildly with Fiji, as well as the home side, drawing strong support.

In the earlier match, Tonga defeated Solomon Islands 3-1 to the delight of Tonga’s excitable fans.

Vanuatu too strong for Tonga

In the first half Vanuatu scored 2 goals by Jacky Ruben and Azariah Soromon,

The two teams got back into the field in the second half, where Vanuatu scored another 2 goals by Azariah Soromon and Tony Kaltack.

In the last three minutes of the game, Vanuatu scored the fifth goal.

Vanuatu went on to beat Tonga 5-0.

Vanuatu judokas impress on Day 1

In the morning session, Vanuatu’s top judoka Joe Mahit defeated New Caledonia’s Jason Mahoux, to a rousing reception from the home fans.

In Round 1, tight hand grips exchanged on both competitors’ arms, leg locks, kicking of competitors’ legs, showing the great strengths and skill of these athletes.

At one point, the referee walked over to the technical officials to point out an issue before returning to continue.

The second round was again a display of great skill between the two competitors.

Fiji, Solomons men put perfect start to the test

The Fijians thrashed Tuvalu 8-0 in Saturday's opening round, while Solomon Islands racked up the same scoreline against Tonga.

Fiji coach Christophe Gamel said despite the lopsided scoreline they made a number of big mistakes, which they couldn't afford to repeat against the Bonitos.

"We know their values, they are technical players. Let's see, it will be interesting for the youth also and for me to compete against this team, it's always interesting," Gamel said.

Solomon Islands coach Felipe Vega-Arango is taking more of a long term approach.
