Vanuatu PM supports decentralisation policy through Independence celebration

Internal Affairs Minister, Andrew Napuat, says the Vanuatu Government is providing funds to each of the 72 area councils to empower them to organize meaningful Independence Day celebrations.

This is part of the government’s decentralisation policy.

Napuat said, “It must be noted that this is the first time a government is empowering people, communities and area councils in the remotest areas of Vanuatu to host a celebration by giving VT 100,000 for an independence celebration and this is to ensure people celebrate the true meaning of independence according to the independence spirit across the whole country.”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs through the Department of Local Authorities is working with the Prime Minister and his office to facilitate the disbursement of funds to communities across Vanuatu to host their celebrations.

Vanuatu gained Independence on 30 July 1980.
