Vanuatu raises awareness on cyber safety

Cybercrime is becoming a major issue in Vanuatu as more young people acquire smartphones.

While Vanuatu currently doesn't have laws to combat cybercrime, up to 60 per cent of children there go online.

Now a Vanuatu police community liaison officer, Jeff Natapei, has been given funding by the Cyber Safety Pasifika group which he is using to install a billboard on cyber safety this month.

Constable Natapei says youth in particular need to understand that although technology is great for communication, it does have its dangers.

"A lot of issues with social media. People are not knowing the importance of privatising their settings on their social media accounts and how to report and block unwanted people, which is leading to a lot of accounts being hacked and a lot of information being stolen from people," said Jeff Natapei.
