Sprigga Mek on Fusion Music

Fusion Music has really found its place in the Pacific, says PNG artist, Sprigga Mek.

He is embracing this style that fuses urban techniques with contemporary traditional sounds.

To Sprigga, this provides a better platform for all artists to deliver the message through the ever evolving phenomenon of music.

Sprigga is currently in Vanuatu for the music festival Fest ‘Napuan 2016, which started last Wednesday, October 12, and will be ending today, October 16.

Observing the style of music over the festival period, Sprigga said for a more reggae influenced society, Pacific artists have been embracing diverse styles of music.

In PNG, Sprigga has created a niche with his heavy hip-hop sounds fused with local Tok Pisin, Motu and Mekeo language and English.

Representing PNG in the annual music festival in Vanuatu, Sprigga and the Black Magic Band impressed their audience with nine hits, including numbers like Pasin Kanaka, Mangi Motu and Faiya Pikinini.

He also smashed out Nakaology from his previous band Nakablood, with fellow Naka Black Bones.

“It was awesome. I believe we were the only LIVE hip-hop act,” says Sprigga.

“The crowd's reaction was awesome. All our friends and family were also able to view the show via live in stream on YouTube, which was even better.

“All PNG wantoks (in Port Villa) came out to show us love so it was so much fun. The country and people are very hospitable. Pasin kilim ol yah,” Sprigga said.

The team will return to PNG on Tuesday with more than just a live gig in Vanuatu.

“Apart from music, it's also about contributing back to the community so yeah, learnt a lot on how to organise such an event back home.”
