Vanuatu Parliament fails to meet two-third requirements

The Vanuatu government has this morning struggled to get numbers to meet the required 2/3 majority for parliament to convene.

Only 24 members of parliament turned up, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the sitting.

In the first attempt this morning at about half-past nine, the Speaker entered the chamber only to find the numbers present short of the required 27 of the 52 member-house. He then suspended the session and sent MPs out for a short break.

When parliament returned late in the morning hours, only 24 government MPs were present.

Government is reported to have been enjoying a comfortable majority but the whereabouts of its other members and that of the Opposition has left people in suspense.

There are 11 government Bills on the agenda for debate in this Second Extra Ordinary Session of parliament. In addition, there are two motions, one for the Guarantee of payments for Severance Pay and second is a motion on the terms of reference for the Ad Hoc Committee for the Constitution (Seventh) (Amendment) Act No. of 2016.

Speaker has adjourned the session to 2pm tomorrow.
