Hiroki Ogita went down the hard way Tuesday at the Rio Olympics, committing a foul during a pole vault attempt. The foul came via his genitals plopping on top of the bar and helping to shove it off the moorings. Sounds like a raw deal.
Now, you're allowed to touch the bar with any part of your body other than your hands, provided the goal of the contact is not to stabilize the bar. It's only when the bar comes down entirely that you get a foul and have to redo the attempt.
Ogita's mistake was coming down hard at the wrong angle.
