Indian 'two-headed snake' rescued by police from gang

The red sand boa is a protected species, and looks like it has two heads, because its tail is shaped like its head to help it defend itself.

The snake is prized on the black market because many believe it brings good luck or has medicinal qualities.

Police in Bangalore arrested four people trying to sell the protected creature for $1,500 (£1,100).

Police said plain clothes officers had organised a sting by pretending to be interested buyers.

Could India and Pakistan go to war?

After all, both countries have long been nuclear powers -- a deterrent that encompasses the lives of a combined 1.4 billion people. Both nations have also seen some years of relative peace along their border, a break from the wars that pockmarked the 20th Century.

And yet, hours after 18 were killed in an attack on an army base in Indian-administered Kashmir, the director-general of military operations for the Indian Army announced that the terrorists carried gear which had "Pakistani markings."

The allegation unleashed a torrent of fury on social media.

Many Hindus consider cows sacred and the slaughter of the animal is banned in several states, including Haryana.

The suspects have been arrested and charged with rape and murder.

However police have told reporters that there is no evidence to suggest that cow protection groups were involved in the attack.

Death for India acid attack convict

Preeti Rathi, who was 23 when she was attacked, had just arrived from Delhi to join the Indian navy as a nurse.

Her neighbour, Ankur Panwar, had said he attacked her because she had rejected his proposal to marry him.

The verdict is significant as most attackers receive minor sentences.

Panwar, 25, was convicted of murder and other offences on Tuesday. He is likely to appeal the verdict in a higher court.

On Thursday, the court said that the crime fell within the "rarest of rare" category which justified the death penalty.

It is thought to have traveled around 620 miles, a journey that included crossing the mighty Brahmaputra River, on its way to northern Bangladesh.

The animal first became separated from the herd in Assam, India. The weak and exhausted beast spent several weeks stranded in a flooded area and nearly drowned in a rescue attempt Thursday.

But Friday -- World Elephant Day -- the pachyderm finally set its feet back on dry land.

'Food crisis' hits 10,000 laid-off Indians in Saudi Arabia

Sushma Swaraj said "large numbers" of Indians had lost their jobs in the kingdom, leaving them with not enough money to buy food.

The Indian community in Jeddah, with the government's help, has distributed food to those in need at the weekend.

Growth has slowed in Saudi Arabia as the country suffers the effect of lower oil prices.

Ms Swaraj appealed on Twitter for the three-million-strong Indian community in the country to "help your fellow brothers and sisters".
