UK calls for investigation into Paris stadium chaos

French police have been criticised for firing tear gas and pepper spray at some Liverpool fans waiting to get in to the stadium in Paris on Saturday.

Nadine Dorries said it was in everyone's interest to "learn lessons".

European football's governing body Uefa has said it will "review these matters urgently".

The French sports ministry has called a meeting with Uefa, the French Football Association, stadium officials and police on Monday to "draw lessons" from the event.

Fifa and Uefa suspend all Russian clubs and national teams

The world and European football governing bodies said they would be banned "until further notice".

It means the Russian men's team will not play their World Cup play-off matches next month and the women's team have been banned from this summer's Euro 2022 competition.

Spartak Moscow have also been kicked out of the Europa League and their last-16 opponents RB Leipzig will advance to the quarter-finals.

Uefa has also ended its sponsorship with Russian energy giant Gazprom.

UEFA starts investigation into Super League

The clubs are the only three of the original 12 to have not distanced themselves from the project following an outpouring of criticism.

"UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary inspectors have today appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of UEFA's legal framework by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus in connection with the so-called 'Super League' project," UEFA said in a statement.

UEFA threatens bans for players in Super League

Addressing an emergency meeting the day after 12 of Europe's top clubs announced the breakaway, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin upped the ante, describing the Super League plan as a "spit in the face" of all football lovers.

"My opinion is that as soon as possible they (the clubs) have to be banned from all our competitions and the players from all our competitions," he added.

City fans can be extra man in Europe

Only 32,000 City supporters attended Gundogan's debut for the club – a 4-0 thumping of Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday – and Pep Guardiola told fans to forget their gripes with UEFA and get behind his team.

UEFA punished the club under Financial Fair Play rules in 2014, and City fans were angered further when CSKA Moscow supporters were allowed to attend a match that was supposed to be played behind closed doors as a sanction for racist behaviour at the Russian club's previous matches.

Astra 1 West Ham 1: Noble penalty not enough

A late equaliser from Denis Alibec saw Astra hold West Ham to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Europa League play-off on Thursday.

Captain Mark Noble scored from the penalty spot just before half-time to give the Premier League side a valuable away goal, but the hosts levelled with seven minutes to play at Marin Anastasovici Stadium to keep the tie finely poised.
