1000-years old human remains found in Vanuatu

Human remains found in unmarked graves in Ifira, Vanuatu are reported to be over 1000-years old.

Archaeologist, Dr Stuart Bedford and his team spent 3 weeks from October into November in 2020 carrying out research in the southern part of the island.

Dr Bedford said, “We have found evidence of occupation going back 2000 years.”

Foremen constructing a chiefs nakamal found the human remains and contacted Dr Bedford and his team.

Dr Bedford describes the three shallow graves as three different holes aligned east to west.

“All the bodies lying on their backs with their arms at their sides.”

“Deduced by the placement of the graves and the layering of the Earth the remains may be about 1000 years old.”

The archeologist said that  It will take about 6 months to process the data from the samples collected as specialists abroad will be analysing the data.
