New Zealand support for reconstruction of schools on Santo

Vanuatu and New Zealand have signed an agreement covering New Zealand’s support to the education sector following Tropical Cyclone Harold.

The Agreement is part of New Zealand’s VT814 million commitment to support the Government of Vanuatu’s TC Harold recovery programme and will focus on the reconstruction of damaged schools in Santo.

The Agreement was signed by Prime Minister, Bob Loughman Weibur and the New Zealand High Commissioner, Jonathan Schwass.

Schwass in his statement reiterated the Government of New Zealand’s commitment to supporting the Government of Vanuatu to manage the recovery from TC Harold.

“Alongside this support to the education sector, New Zealand’s TC Harold support will include rebuilding two health clinics on Ambrym, supporting the Oxfam Unblocked Cash programme, support for the Vanuatu Agriculture Research & Technical Centre on Santo, support for water, sanitation and hygiene through the Department of Water Resources and the Vanuatu Society of People with Disability (VSPD),” Schwass said.

In response Prime Minister Loughman thanked New Zealand for the support.

“I thank the Government of New Zealand for this support. The funding will assist affected communities to recover from the aftermath of TC Harold,” he said.
