Oxfam Vanuatu conducts CDBRR refresher workshop

A team comprising of Oxfam in Vanuatu's Resilience team, Shefa Provincial Council and the Shefa Provincial Disaster Office have conducted a 3-day Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) refresher workshop in Moso island.

The refresher workshop held last week under the Disaster READY programme was aimed at training participants to have better knowledge of disaster management in Vanuatu, implementation of basic CBDRR activities and complete the Community Disaster and Climate Change Committees (CDCCC) registration processes

Oxfam confirmed that participants were from the CDCCCs from the two communities of Sunae and Tassariki in Moso island.

“Similar workshops will be carried out in communities of Lelepa, Emau, Moso, Ifira, Pele, Nguna, Tongoa, Emae, Buninga, Tongariki, Mataso and Makira.

“At the end of the workshops, the CDCCCS will fill out their registration forms and have them signed and validated by their Area Council Secretaries. These forms will be updated on the Shefa Province CDCCC database and passed onto NDMO,” Oxfam Vanuatu stated.

Since 2008, the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has been developing its network of volunteers in communities around Vanuatu, these networks are known as Community Disaster and Climate Change Committees (CDCCC) and so far about 200 CDCCCs have been set up around Vanuatu.

Oxfam has been supporting NDMO for years in the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) scope. Following the new NDMO strategic guideline, Oxfam is willing to support NDMO to achieve this goal.

Oxfam's Disaster READY programme in Vanuatu is being funded by the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP) and the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies (MACP).
