Sagoa’s visit is a remembrance of sportsmanship in Mele Village

“2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu reminds me back 43 years ago, when I was a Silver medallist of the National Cricket Team in 1979 Pacific Games in Fiji,“ said Tafak Mansale

Tafak is now in his late 70’s and remembers being a National player for the New Hebrides.

He was very emotional when he was given the opportunity to be one of the guest alongside with the Chief Poilapa Simeon, and to hold the Sagoa, and be part of history.

On the 25th of May, Van2017 Team and Sagoa made a short village visit at Mele, known as the biggest village in Efate.
The Sagoa was warmly welcomed by elders, mamas, children and youth who were in charge of the program in the village, and was later guided by villagers to go around various stations.
The parade with the Sagoa around the village was led by a chorus of beautiful voices of mama’s, singing with joy to express how happy they were to have Sagoa on their door steps.

“This day is a special day for me because it brings me back to 1979, when I was selected in the National Cricket Team. We played against Fiji in the Semi Final and Vanuatu won! We went to the Final against PNG, but sadly we lost.”
“I am so happy, and today, 25th May is another memorable day of my sportsmanship, and this is because of God’s Will”, said Tavaki with a big smile, reflecting his joy.

Sagoa is pursuing its journey this week to Sanma Province with Games Mascot Nasi, when they land on Sunday 28th of May in Luganville. The Van2017 Mascot Team will be touring schools in villages on the Islands of Santo, Malo, Aore, Bokissa, and Tutuba.
