Movie Screening to mark 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

This campaign is designed to raise awareness and promote justice on violence against women, human rights, and disabilities.

Nambawan Café is supporting the campaign by hosting a special premier movie showing “Mercy's Blessings”, on Friday December 9 at 6:30 pm.

This film which has won 12 international awards and has never before been shown in the South Pacific.

It offers a beautiful and thought provoking look at the theme of the campaign: From Peace in the Home, Peace in the World: Making Education Safe for All.

Men urged to take lead to end violence

UN under-secretary-general and executive director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, made this call today during the launch of a new PMV bus under the MeriSeif program at Gerehu. 

The bus is exclusively for women and children provided as part of UN Women’s ‘Safe Public Transport for Women and Children Program’.

The buses provide a safe public transport for women and a space to discuss issues affecting their safety and mobility.

Mlambo-Ngcuka said the men in our communities need to know that they must take lead to end violence against women.

RAMSI chief in Solomons speaks out on gender violence

Quinton Devlin has written a newspaper editorial to mark the beginning tomorrow of the international '16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.'

He said Solomon Islands has a very low crime rate by global standards, but family violence, mostly against women and girls, out-numbers and out-ranks all other crimes committed in the country.

He said studies show about two in every three women in the Solomons have experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner and that the first sexual experience for more than one in three Solomons' women was forced or coerced.
