7-year sentence for receiving G4S robbery money

On August 25, 2015, Ricky Antio pleaded guilty before the Waigani National Court to receiving K1,500 stolen cash monies.

The court deducted those 11 months spent in remand from the head sentence of 11 years, leaving Antio with 10 years, one month.

Justice Mogish further ordered 3 years to be suspended from that remaining 10 years – one month jail time.

Elderly woman assaulted over land dispute

It is a source of disharmony and people should take the matter up with local authorities. Justice Panuel Mogish recently made the remarks after a Rigo man attacked an old woman.

Justice Mogish told Rawali Geno that elderly people must be treated with respect and attacking a defenseless and vulnerable woman was uncalled for, even though she uprooted plants on a disputed land.

“This woman is related to you. I would strongly urge parties to solve the land dispute before someone is killed and seriously injured.

Rape, an element of disrespect, says Judge

Justice Panuel Mogish, in sentencing a man last week to 22 years in prison over the sexual assault of two teenagers, said rape is a crime of violence on a female person’s body.

“It is a degrading offense that involves the sexual violation of a person’s dignity. At its highest, it (rape) portrays elements of disrespect and inequality towards a woman,” he said.

Justice Mogish said women become objects of sex, and sex alone, to men like the offender, who prey upon them and rape them.

Judge warns ‘men who assault women’

Domestic violence is a constitutional crime of violence and Section 36 of the constitution states in no uncertain terms that “No person shall be submitted to…treatment or punishment that is cruel or otherwise inhuman, or is inconsistent with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person”.

Criminal Court Judge, Justice Panuel Mogish, made these comments recently at the Bomana National Court sitting when sentencing a man to life in prison over the murder of his wife.
