Friendly Beach Resort on Tanna Island officially opened

Over five hundred people attended the celebration recently and as in Tanna the Movie, the colour, the language, the sheer impact of custom and culture was unique and overwhelming, it was breath-taking.

Friendly Beach is a small resort on the east coast of Tanna owned by Australian, Joanne Wade and her immediate family. The property was destroyed by cyclone Pam in 2015 and Joanne made the decision to rebuild only four unique villas and rebrand as Friendly Beach, a boutique luxury adventure resort.

Vanuatu-Solomon islands ties to further strengthen

Speaking at the 39th Independence celebration for Solomon Islands yesterday, Salwai highlighted the areas of cooperation in economic resources, political support, social bonding and human resources and this will continue to respect this mutual relationship for the betterment of our two countries.

2nd edition of The Essential Vanuatu out July 26

Prime Minister Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas has viewed the proofs of the book and says it will again be a fantastic marketing tool for Vanuatu.

“The Essential Vanuatu covers everything from investment to agriculture, tourism to culture, including aviation and infrastructure. It is a great reflection of our nation, our people and our potential,” he said.

The government intends to use the book as an official gift to visiting dignitaries and on official overseas missions.

The Essential Vanuatu is published by Photogenic Ltd and edited by Tiffany Carroll.

 

Vanuatu police chief lays out 100-day plan

The commitment released by the police said the commissioner is aiming to establish discipline within the force, to develop unity, encourage independence and grow trust and confidence, so the country's security and strategic priorities are assured.

RNZI reports the 100-days plan is in line with the several schemes already in place, including the Vanuatu National Development Plan.

Vanuatu looks at curfew to curb alcohol-related crime

The internal affairs minister, Alfred Maoh, said the move follows the death of a man who was beaten at a Port Vila nightclub last month.

He said he had already ordered a crackdown on liquor licence holders to ensure they're complying with the law and not selling to underage people.

But Mr Maoh said the government may consider a weekend curfew for some groups of people, according to a report on RNZI.

The conference in Port Vila is being organised by the South Pacific Tourism Organisation, in partnership with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and Vanuatu Tourism Office (VTO).

Vanuatu to enforce booze laws

The internal affairs minister Alfred Moah said police were inspecting liquor outlets and nightclubs to ensure they were complying with the law and not selling to underage people.

Mr Moah said the government was also considering a curfew for some people.

RNZI reports the move followed last month's death of a man who was beaten at a Port Vila night club, which has prompted widespread outrage.

Mr Moah said the crackdown was not a knee-jerk reaction to one incident, but a response to an increase of alcohol-related crime.

New sanitation facilities for Seaside communities in Port Vila

The residents live in Seaside Paama, Seaside Futuna and Seaside Tongoa.

The sanitation facilities have been refurbished and extended to include universally accessible (disabled) toilet and shower facilities.

These facilities were reviewed by the Vanuatu Society for People with Disability (VSPD) to ensure safe and easy access for persons with mobility issues.

Child height hand-washing basins and laundry tubs as well as cleaning supply cupboards were included in the refurbishments.  

Vanuatu calls on new FFC chair to uphold strength through regionalism, unity

Speaking on behalf of Vanuatu Fisheries Minister Matai Seremaiah Nawalu at the FFC meeting, Vanuatu’s High Commissioner to Australia, Kalfau Kaloris said last year was a challenging one but there were some highlights.

The minister acknowledged that Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) continues to improve its performances and is better responding to the needs of its members in all aspects of fisheries management and developments.

The recommitment of FFA Leaders to fisheries and the successful negotiations on the continuance of the US Treaty is another achievement.

Pastor elected 9th President of Vanuatu

Moses tallied 39 votes in the fourth round of voting by electoral college members in Parliament Chambers today.

Former prime minister Maxime Carlot Korman received 17 votes.

Fifty-seven of the 58-member electoral college was present for the process.

Deputy Prime Minister Joe Natuman was absent and had officially notified the Chief Justice and Returning Officer, Vincent Lunabek.

There was one invalid vote, which had 2 sheets of paper in the envelope.

The new President will be sworn in shortly.
