New evacuation centre in Vanuatu village

The project which is supported by Pacific Pathways is currently under construction.

Tevauli is a remote village inland on Paama island which was totally destroyed by Cyclone Pam in 2015.

Residents had to relocate to a nearby village and stay there until their houses were rebuilt.

Members of the greater Tevauli Aut community who live in Port Vila and on Santo raised funds for the new evacuation centre.

Pacific Pathways said the project is progressing well with the foundation in place and walls are almost completed.

A spokesperson, Ewan Perrin, said the number has jumped from 20,000 yesterday as communication has been restored to affected areas.

Mr Perrin said in the western division, there are about 22,000 people being housed in evacuation centres, and in the central division, about 16,000.
