Ni-Vanuatu people living with impacts of cyclones Judy and Kevin a month on

Sisead Village community council chairman Paul Fred in Port Vila lives in one of the many homes in which residents do not have water seeping into the house because of a tarpaulin handed out in aid that lines his corrugated tin roof.

"To accept two cyclones within a week, it's unexplainable. We've never experienced two cyclones like this one," Fred told RNZ Pacific.

"But it's a good experience for the generations of today, it comes to remind them that we have to prepare."

Vanuatu is recovering after two devastating cyclones and an earthquake​ ripped through the island two weeks ago, destroying homes and livelihoods.

Chris Hipkins says regular Hercules flights delivering essential supplies is ongoing and personnel are still on the ground providing disaster response co-ordination.

“If they’re asking for more support in that area, that’s something we’d certainly look at.”

Many trees still lie where they were uprooted and tossed more than 10 months ago, the trunks of the few coconut palms that were spared sit bare of any leaves or fruit.

Many houses still have bright blue tarpaulins serving as roofs and some buildings have been abandoned altogether, their crumbled remains sitting lifeless in the harsh tropical sun.
