Vanuatu soccer star advocates RISPEK at National Games

Vanuatu RISPEK is part of World Vision's ‘It Takes a World to End Violence Against Children’ campaign.

In Vanuatu, the campaign is called Vanuatu Rispek - It Takes Respect to Create a Safer Vanuatu with the slogan 'Rispektem Yu wan, Rispektem Narafala man' (Respect Yourself, Respect others).

The campaign aims to help young people understand their rights and the rights of others in relation to consent and to feel empowered to take a stand against sexual violence to create a safer Vanuatu.

Vanuatu’s Wan Smolbag wins water polo competition

The competition was organized by Vanuatu Aquatics Federation.

A total of seven teams competed in the event.

The grand final was a display of exceptional water polo skills and outstanding fitness.

Wan Smolbag Youth Centre had dominated throughout the day until a close semi-final saw them move through to the final defeating the Misfits by 1 goal.

Team Boss from Tebakor also dominated throughout the day coming up against the undefeated Wan Smolbag team in the final.

New evacuation centre in Vanuatu village

The project which is supported by Pacific Pathways is currently under construction.

Tevauli is a remote village inland on Paama island which was totally destroyed by Cyclone Pam in 2015.

Residents had to relocate to a nearby village and stay there until their houses were rebuilt.

Members of the greater Tevauli Aut community who live in Port Vila and on Santo raised funds for the new evacuation centre.

Pacific Pathways said the project is progressing well with the foundation in place and walls are almost completed.

Vanuatu Health Ministry declares flu outbreak

It has declared an outbreak of influenza in the Port Vila area.

In the past two weeks there has also been an increase in suspected influenza cases at the Northern Provincial Hospital in Luganville.

The ministry said it is closely monitoring the cases.

During this time the Ministry is strongly recommending that members of the public to take action to prevent getting infected and if individuals are experiencing flu-like symptoms, to visit their nearest health facility.

NZ govt committed to Vanuatu wharf project

New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade was responding to a call from Vanuatu's opposition leader, Ishmael Kalsakau, for an explanation as to why the South Paray project is incomplete.

Mr Kalsakau said a temporary wharf at the site was in a dire state and he asked the New Zealand High Commission to explain what had happened to plans for an inter-island ferry wharf and its funding.

The ministry said while there had been some delays with the project, New Zealand was committed to working with its partners to complete it.

Seeds distribution under Food Security and Livelihood Programme on Vanuatu’s Ambae

This is under a Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) programme and is  part of a recovery programme to assist the evacuees that have returned from Maewo to re- settle and start their normal lives after the eruption of Lobenben volcano.

Save the Children officer based on Ambae, Amos Talu said “the aim of the Food Security and Livelihood Programme is to ensure the people have nutritious food to eat and to maintain food security and improve their livelihood”.

Vanuatu para-athletes receive heroes welcome

Nakat won a silver medal in the 800m event.

The teenager and his colleague, Niara arrived at White Grass Airport Thursday morning to a big crowd of relatives and friends.

They were also welcomed at the airport by representatives of the Tafea Provincial Government Council, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Department of Women’s Affairs and Families.

Families shared hugs and tears of joy when the duo entered the terminal entrance.

People waved and students drew flowers along the road as the tea travelled through Isangel to the Lamenu Stadium.

Unfinished Vanuatu wharf upsets Opposition

Mr Kalsakau has contacted the New Zealand High Commission for an explanation on what's happening with the inter-island shipping wharf project and its funding.

RNZ Pacific's correspondent reported the Vanuatu Project Management Unit had said the project was stopped last year over design concerns.

Mr Kalsakau said he was appalled by the dire condition of a temporary wharf.

When ships are operating, the area is congested and hazardous for crews, passengers and adjacent residents, he said.

     

Vanuatu beach volleyball teams do well at Arafura

The team lost to Lampard/Landers of Australia 0-2 in their final pool round match today.

The team made up of Joshua Toares and Stivano Bango won their second match 2-0 against 1st B.

They won their first match against Australia (2) earlier on Wednesday.

Vanuatu women’s team on Miller Pata and Henriette Iatika won their match against Northern Territory 2-0.
