Global Green Growth Institute releases guide to Green Entrepreneurship in Vanuatu

The guide is designed to support local entrepreneurs in developing and launching green businesses as well as helping to achieve Vanuatu’s climate change and environmental goals.

The Guide to Green Entrepreneurship in Vanuatu is based on the content that was included in GGGI’s “Jumpstart Your Green Business” workshop, held in Port Vila last September.

It focuses on helping people create new businesses that address environmental or social issues as a core part of their business model.

Telecom Vanuatu to help Tafea National Games

Andrew Markia Supervisor for Tanna TVL Branch said, TVL is proud to show its support and to be part of the Games and is hoping that items donated will help the LOC to "keep smiling" while they continue to work in preparation for the games.

Markia also wished every participating athlete and the host province the best of luck for the Games.

In response, the LOC acknowledged TVL's continuous support for sports development.

“We hope that this partnership grows as we continue to grow and develop sports in Tafea and Vanuatu.”

Vanuatu economy to remain steady after developed status change - IMF

The UN will upgrade Vanuatu to a developed country in December 2020, removing some of the financial assistance benefits it has enjoyed.

The International Monetary Fund, which led a team visit to Port Vila last week, said Vanuatu's development relationships will stay strong after graduation.

Team leader Dirk Muir said a full recovery from 2015's Cyclone Pam is in sight and the tourism industry is expected to continue to grow.

Vanuatu’s Matthais well-heeled for Arafura Games 2019

The para athlete from Tanna, a small island in the south of the Vanuatu archipelago, had never run in shoes, let alone on a synthetic track, until he came to Darwin for the Arafura Games 2019.

In fact, he’d never been in a lift or a plane, seen a multi-storey building, ridden an escalator, or visited a shopping centre until he was selected to compete along with four other athletes from Vanuatu.

Vanuatu’s Santo holds first ever plumbing and trades training

The training is being organised in partnership with the Vanuatu Skills Partnership, Torgil Rural Training Centre (RTC) and Bombua School.

The trainee are from Torgil Rural Training Centre and neighbouring islands who have prior experience in the field, as well as carpenters who are seeking to enhance their plumbing skills.

“Within the one-month course, four core units will be delivered and participants will translate their learning in the classroom, into practical hands-on exercises at Bombua School”.

Vanuatu and New Caledonia organise ‘Friendly Games’

Vanuatu Basketball Federation (VBF) National Basketball Development Officer, Sach Duthu said both woman teams performed quality and fair game.

New Caledonia Basketball Federation Secretary General Bridget Delaveuve, graced the games and stated her satisfaction regarding their participation in the ‘Friendly Games’.

"It was a great experience for our girls and the coach. It was an opportunity to get a level of performance for our women's team preparing for the (Pacific) games," said Delaveuve.

ANZAC Day commemorated in Vanuatu

In Port Vila the President, Obed Moses Tallis, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrew Napuat attended the service at the Cenotaph grounds with the New Zealand High Commissioner, Jonathan Schwass and the Australian High Commissioner, Jenny Da Rin.

“On ANZAC Day we remember the appalling losses of the First World War, and all the wars which followed. We remember those who died and we acknowledge the suffering of those who were imprisoned in war, those who came home damaged, and those whose lives were destroyed by the grief of losing a loved one,” Mr Schwass said.

Over 200 suspected dengue fever cases reported in Vanuatu

Relief Web reports that between the 8th and 16th of April, 42 suspected dengue cases were reported in the capital Port Vila and Luganville.

The surge in suspected cases has been linked in part to travel between various Pacific Islands territories.

One of the Vila reports was an imported case from a traveller coming from Solomon Islands in January.

Another confirmed case detected in Luganville has travel history to New Caledonia.

The DENV-2 serotype of dengue has been circulating in Vanuatu for the last 2 years.

 

     

Several deaths from flu in Vanuatu

Medical Superintendent, Dr Tony Harry, told the Vanuatu Daily Post the exact number of deaths cannot be confirmed as some of the dead had underlying illnesses as well as the flu virus.

He said Vila Central Hospital has been busy round the clock receiving flu patients of all ages, though most are babies.

Dr Harry said those with flu symptoms such as fever, sore throats and headaches were advised to rest and drink plenty of fluids.

New equipment to boost Vanuatu Health Ministry's malaria data collection capacity

The Ensure 81% Coverage of Long-Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets Programme, which is funded by UNDP-Global Fund Western Pacific HIV, TB and Malaria Programmes donated the resources.

The donation is part of ongoing support to the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme to strengthen surveillance and effectively control malaria in four provinces and strive for elimination in two provinces.

A total of 36 national and provincial staff received the resources for data entry of line lists of malaria cases in the tracker module at health facilities.
