Vanuatu opposition MP plays down motion talk

Ishmael Kalsakau told the Daily Post the opposition has a total of sixteen MPs, following the defection of the Leaders Party from the coalition government amid a cabinet reshuffle.

However, Mr Salwai still holds a clear majority in the 52-seat parliament.

Mr Kalsakau again responded to reports of an imminent motion by saying the opposition would only table one when it has the numbers to pass it.

Last week, Mr Kalsakau told RNZ Pacific he was working to develop a perfect team.

The announcements came on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Papua New Guinea last week.

Meanwhile, the Vanuatu Daily Post reports Vanuatu signed seven different MoUs with China earlier this month, including a Belt and Road agreement.

Vanuatu deny New Caledonia a double victory

The first match took only fourteen minutes for New Caledonia to score the goal which would secure them the win.

In his international debut Antoine Roine, the top scorer in the Super Ligue with 22 goals this season, didn’t take long to show his skills in front of goal. Accelerating past the defence to latch onto a cross from the left from Joseph Tchacko.

New Caledonia continued to dominate the first half but despite a couple of credible chances, were unable to add anything further to their tally.

Announced yesterday, it will include significant infrastructure upgrades for the Vanuatu Mobile Force and Police Maritime Wing and enhanced training and leadership opportunities for all three arms of the Vanuatu Police Force.

Permanent homes for displaced Ambae evacuees

New Zealand has contributed VUV 8,736,006 to purchase building materials for 22 local houses, 6 shared toilets, and a community rainwater harvesting system.

The materials were delivered Thursday to Ifira Wharf, and are ready to be shipped to Maewo this week.

The National Disaster Management Office has developed a plan to assist the 22 most affected Ambae households who have lost their homes and livelihoods on Ambae.

Ambaeans will face challenges on return to island, resident says

James Bari, who is a Penama Province councillor, has been living on Santo since the government ordered an evacuation of the approximately 10,000 people living on Ambae due to volcanic activity three months ago.

Those displaced want to return to their homes when the government's state of emergency is lifted at the end of the month, but continued volcanic activity means this may not be possible.

Mr Bari said there will be many challenges faced by residents on return to the island.

Vanuatu opposition won't rule out attempt at no confidence motion

The loss of the Leaders Party's eight MPs on Wednesday means the government of Prime Minister Charlot Salwai only has a one seat majority.

Mr Kalsakau would not be drawn on how many MPs now support him, saying he is more interested in building a perfect team.

He said he could either develop a strong opposition which will support him until the election in January 2020, or push for a vote of no confidence.

Ambae volcanic activity stablilises

Possible imminent eruption could occur at any time in such major unrest state.

VMGD confirmed that observations in October and November 2018 confirm that the volcanic cloud emitted are white meaning only steam.

The presence of ash that has fallen on Ambae during the last eruption will continue to change the behaviour of streams and creeks when it rains.

The creeks and streams can produce floods and carry a lot more debris (sands, gravel and boulders).
