Women to march against violence in Vanuatu

This comes after a woman was abducted, assaulted and verbally abused for expressing her views in a public forum on Facebook.

Deputy Lord Mayor of Port Vila, Leimara Malachi, said the protest was planned for next Wednesday to coincide with the first sitting of the country's new parliament for the year.

Man arrested as Vanuatu Police raid house for drugs

An Australian national has been arrested in connection with the raid.

The residence, next to Vila East School, was under police surveillance for the last two weeks.

Police said the house was used as nursery for marijuana and that the plants all in pots were watched to grow to their full maturity stage.

While no further details were made available by police, insiders say the entire house was used up for different processes and stages from seedlings phase, transplants, and vegetative stage up to the flowering stage.

Seven arrested for attack on woman in Vanuatu

The men were all employed in the public transport sector, including the president of the Vanuatu Land Transport Association.

It was alleged they were involved in the abduction on Sunday after the woman had criticised the transport operators over they way they squabbled while seeking fares among tourists disembarking from cruise ships.

A UNPKO report has singled out misconduct behavior of a Vanuatu Peacekeeper who had served in East Timor, Corporal George Japheth and it also sighted the failure of his three colleagues, Corporal Glen Nicholson Mahina, Corporal Kapsam Willie and Commander North, Willie Samuel, to report the alien behavior to the relevant authorities.

WACC Chairperson Mrs jenny Ligo condemned the act and said those responsible must face the full force of the law.

Mrs Ligo said those responsible for such an act to cause any form of action to displace women and children must be held accountable.

Kidnap victims return to Vanuatu

RNZI correspondent reports sources in Vanuatu as saying the 37-year-old woman and her nine-year old daughter were kidnapped seven years ago.

The repatriation was arranged by the police forces of both countries.
